Hvíter Hvíter Dager, Iceland's Oscar entry for Best Foreign Film this year, is a quiet, mature look at grief and memory. The delicate dealing with love lost recalls Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine and Céline Sciamma's Portrait de La Jeune Fille en Feu, regarding the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The cinematography, shot in a noticeably textured 35mm, is peculiar in the way it involves the setting and keeps us a certain physical distance from the characters. I think Michael Haneke would be proud of this film.
The central character Ingimunder's relationship with his granddaughter Salka serves the film in predictable but endearing ways. Strong child acting is often taken for granted, but Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir's performance is far from typical. It is also a testament to both fine direction (Hlynur Palmason) and strong casting because the two leads are almost irreplaceable and truly contribute to make the film something special.
A White, White Day is enriched by its simplicity and singularity as it takes on heavy themes. The characters are real, the story is thoughtfully restrained, and the ending is remarkable. One of the more memorable films of the year.

In GRETEL & HANSEL, it is a time of famine and hardship. A widow, at her wits' end, throws her children out of the house to fend for themselves. Older sister Gretel ( Sophia Lillis) takes charge of her younger brother, Hansel ( Samuel Leakey), but it's not long before they get hungry. A hunter ( Charles Babalola) helps them along, and soon they find a house with an inviting feast laid out on the table. An old woman ( Alice Krige) invites the children in and allows them to stay, for a little while, in exchange for doing some chores. Gretel fears that something is wrong, but then the old woman starts teaching her about how to unleash her inner, hidden strengths. Everything seems to be going fine... until Hansel disappears. Is it any good? This strange, austere, artful, violent retelling of the old fairy tale is one of those movies that's more moody than scary. It won't be to every taste, but it's weirdly poetic and mesmerizing. With Gretel & Hansel and two previous chillers ( The Blackcoat's Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House), director Osgood "Oz" Perkins  -- the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins -- has established himself as a confident, patient creator of chills who takes risks and is decidedly out of the mainstream. His focus on framing, textures, shapes, silences, and music -- rather than jump scares, shocks, or screaming -- makes his films a little harder to sell. His Gretel & Hansel, with Gretel now coming first in the title, is also a story about women. Triangles permeate the film, suggesting the strength of both the witch and Gretel, and Perkins plays around with other recurring themes and symbols, too. The overall tone can feel a bit academic and perhaps a bit chilly, but the casting saves the day. Lillis, who was so delightful and spunky in the two It films, warms up her scenes with her character's younger brother, and Krige (the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact) has a slithery quality that makes her witch somehow hypnotic. The throwback electronic music score by French composer Rob also helps create an unsettling, otherworldly quality. But overall, this is a movie about a young woman moving from a defensive position in the world to a more powerful offensive one. Talk to your kids about... Granted, in the grim land that 16-year-old Gretel and little brother Hansel are growing up in, “old women” and “treats” seem, at first, like relatively benign concerns. Oh, it might’ve been a nice place at one point. But lately, the region’s most popular pastime has been to, well,  pass on —horrifically, most often. Going insane is a close No. 2. And if you’re not killed off by your crazy relatives, there are always the monsters to worry about. Why, ever since their own mother kicked them out of the house (slamming a hatchet into the dining room table for emphasis), they’ve been on the run from all manner of horrors. But when they peeked inside and saw  all that food, it was pretty much game over—at least for hungry Hansel. The home’s owner clearly liked children, too—or, perhaps, skilled and playful pigs. Why else would the slide out front smell like bacon? Indeed, the lady of the house seems  thrilled  to see her new visitors, complaining not a whit that Hansel broke in and started helping himself to all her sumptuous victuals. Why, she  loves  children. Can’t get enough of them. Indeed, she would like nothing more than to have them for dinner. Er, have them  over  for dinner, of course. In fact, she suggests, why don’t they stay a while? Eat a little food. Put some meat on those bones. Why, Hansel is just the most  scrumptious  little boy. And Gretel … well, the old woman can tell that Gretel is special. Indeed, she sees something of herself in the girl. A special  magic, you might say, that, like a fire, just needs a little time, a little air, a little fuel. The old lady’s house isn’t made of gingerbread. The food at her table never seems to spoil. But Gretel knows—at least at first—that something’s rotten in this house. Positive Elements For much of the movie, Gretel’s a pretty good big sister under the most trying of conditions. When Hansel and Gretel’s mom forces them to leave, Gretel, though she’s only 16, becomes a surrogate mother of sorts, and a pretty decent one. And even if her brother can be a pain, and even though she does complain at times that she has to “share everything with him, ” Gretel doesn’t want her brother to get, y’know,  eaten. Spiritual Elements If you’ve not heard the old fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel spoiler warning: The old lady is a real witch. What kind of witch? Even the movie doesn’t know exactly. The story seems to want its gingerbread cake and eat it, too. Oh, the witch is  bad, that’s for sure. But the film suggests that her powers—like the powers that are beginning to stir inside Gretel—are naturalistic: They simply  are, and you can either ignore them or let them flourish. Still, we do see an upside-down pentagram carved in a tree near the witch’s house. And the witchcraft we see practiced here seems far,  far  more malignant than anything in, say, a J. K. Rowling novel. The magic that the old woman possesses seems, stylistically, to be a blend of pagan, occult and fairy-tale motifs. Moreover, an old legend suggests that these abilities, called sometimes a “second sight, ” were  given  to some. Inconsistent? Yes. But the tale suggests that a man took his sick, beautiful baby up to a mysterious, magical practitioner for healing, and that’s exactly what the darkly clad enchantress gave the man and child. But in place of the disease, the magician gave the baby these powers—powers that were either evil in themselves or, at least, turned the child evil. Powers of “darkness, ” the movie calls them, even if it seems unable to commit to saying whether the magic we see is  inherently  malignant (possibly because it seems to be angling for a sequel). Christianity is alluded to, but not very positively. Gretel gripes that the local cleric takes most of the area’s food as she talks with an old man in a room festooned with stained glass. Gretel says that her father has “gone ahead to his reward. ” When the siblings first glimpse the old lady’s food spread, one says that it’s “heaven. ” The old woman refers to the Creator as a “she. ” We see and hear stories about “ghosts. ” Trees and other forms of wood obey magical directives, and someone seems to materialize from a pool of bloodlike black liquid. [ Spoiler Warning] Gretel’s emerging magical powers blossom fully by the end of the story. She seems determined to use them in benign and beautiful ways, rejecting the evil trajectory of the witch who entrapped and mentored her in her skills. But when her fingers turn black near the end, it’s hard not to see it as a suggestion that Gretel’s good intentions may yet be corrupted by the dark magic within her. Still, Gretel’s use of magic seems to free the souls of children whom the previous witch has both eaten and whose souls she’s apparently kept bound to her as well. Sexual Content When an old man interviews Gretel early on, it’s ostensibly for a housekeeping position. But he asks pointedly and repeatedly whether she’s a virgin or not, and there’s a subtly creepy reference to how she should deal with the man’s “guests. ” Gretel’s mother is furious that Gretel didn’t make more of an effort to get the job. “He didn’t need a  housekeeper, ” Gretel tells her mom, her insinuation clear if not clearly spelled out. Gretel and Hansel meet with a kindly huntsman who points them in the direction of others of his ilk. They’re good men, he says. But he also suggests that Gretel is vulnerable to being seduced or misused by, presumably, less scrupulous men she might encounter. The man cautions Gretel of “wolves” along the way, too—a reference, it would seem, to the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale and (what some say are) its underlying sexual themes. Gretel has her period at the old woman’s house (we see her looking underneath her bed sheets), and she goes to the river to wash the menstrual blood out of her clothes. A vision she has also seems to subtly echo menstruation. Gretel takes a bath, but all we see are her knees and a bit of legs. Violent Content Cannibalism is an inescapable part of the original Hansel and Gretel fairy tale, and the film certainly leans into that aspect of the story. A witch dumps a load of organs and entrails—indistinguishable en masse, but still slimy and bloody—onto a table, then adds a fat, bloated arm to the mix. (We see other such appendages in a basket. ) The witch pulls a long lock of blond hair from her mouth, decorated by a tiny bow at the end. Gretel discovers that the food they’ve been eating all this time was made, magically, of dead children. We see several kids walk, in a trance, to their doom: Two are led into a large stone building, and as we’re  told  what happened to them, we see telltale red smoke billow from the chimney. Shadowy figures talk about sharpening saws that’ll cut through bone. Someone is set on fire and immolated—eventually falling into pieces and onto a magical barbecue. A zombie-like thing is shot in the head with an arrow, apparently “killing” him. (The wound is bloodless, but obvious. ) In flashback, a man begins to stick a white-hot poker into his mouth—a form of magically-induced suicide, it’s suggested. We see a horse, from a distance, collapse grotesquely even as we hear its bones breaking. Gretel has loads of macabre visions featuring dead little children, black-bleeding corpses lying underneath sheets, and a girl whose head falls off. Crude or Profane Language Gretel blurts out the word “h–, ” which Hansel repeats (chastising her for swearing). Drug and Alcohol Content A very hungry Gretel and Hansel eat some mysterious mushrooms in the woods and get quite high. The old woman and Gretel both concoct and drink a potion or two. Other Negative Elements Gretel vomits in a receptacle. The old woman digs a huge hole in the woods for some reason, and she seems to retch into it as well—which somehow facilitates a physical transformation in her. Hansel relieves himself on trees a couple of times. A huntsman suggests that the very dirty little boy could be mistaken for “compost. ” Gretel is not always the kindest of big sisters. And the witch plays on Gretel’s sisterly struggles by suggesting that she needn’t be weighed down by her sense of responsibility to her tag-along little brother. Conclusion Director Oz Perkins (son of  Psycho  star Anthony Perkins) has carved out a niche for himself, crafting a handful of visually striking (if narratively dubious) horror flicks.  Gretel & Hansel  follows close to form. In an interview with  Entertainment Weekly, he said that he wanted to turn this fairy tale into more of a coming-of-age story. “I wanted Gretel to be somewhat older than Hansel, so it didn’t feel like two 12-year-olds—rather a 16-year-old and an 8-year-old, ” Perkins said. “There was more of a feeling like Gretel having to take Hansel around everywhere she goes, and how that can impede one’s own evolution, how our attachments and the things that we love can sometimes get in the way of our growth. ” Indeed, the witch in the movie tries to encourage Gretel’s “evolution, ” telling her to shed the things that “want you as you were, rather than who you were meant to be. ” That’s a message very much of the age—and a very destructive one, as well. Today, secular culture tends to think of individuals as flowers: We’re meant to bloom and be beautiful and radiant—whatever “beautiful” and “radiant” means to us. And as such, we have not just the right, culture further suggests, but the moral  obligation  to push against anything that might keep us from blooming as fully as we possibly can. So while the movie doesn’t support anyone  eating  Hansel, it does sympathize with the desire to  get rid  of him. After all, Gretel can’t bloom with the little boy (who thwacks away at trees with his insensitive hatchet) blocking all of the film’s paganesque, female-centric sun. But here’s the thing that we often forget: In nature, flowers are merely the intro for a plant’s main purpose, the preamble to fruit, to the grain, to the seeds we need to keep on living. Flowers  take, by design. But plants  give. They feed animals, the ground and people, too—and in their act of giving, they perpetuate life. The Christian faith is predicated on sacrificial giving. The faith’s Founder demonstrated the ultimate act of sacrifice at Calvary, and myriad Bible verses exhort us to do the same. Yes, I think God wants us to grow in our own gifts. He wants us to realize the potential He gave us. But that growth has a greater purpose: to be better able to give to others. I think even the film itself is uncomfortable with its own message. After all, the main spokesperson for self-actualization also likes to  eat little kids. Not a character to be trusted, methinks. And Gretel is far more winsome and likable when she’s in the role of the giving older sister (even though we understand how hard it is) than when she’s exploring how to, as Perkins says, “evolve. ” Gretel’s evolution leads, inherently, to a discomforting and ambiguous ending. It’s as if the movie, while trying to convey one point, can’t completely avoid the more profound truth below the surface. And that leaves us with a messy movie indeed—one with ambitions that go unrealized. Filled with creepy occultism,  Gretel & Hansel  is made of gingerbread: Alluring to look at, but structurally and morally hollow.

T here is something melodramatic and soapy about this glossy adaptation of Michael Morpurgo ’s second world war novel for children, the story of a French boy who helps to save Jewish children by smuggling them over the mountains into Spain. The problem, I think, comes from a fear of upsetting its target audience of older kids (the film has a 12A rating). So the tough bits are fuzzily done – at arm’s length and hurried over – making for an oddly flat unemotional watch. The accents don’t help: the actors all speaking English dialogue with ’Allo-’Allo accents (with Jean Reno thrown in for a bit of Gallic authenticity). The setting is occupied France. In the Pyrenees, teenager Jo (Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp) discovers that mean old lady Widow Horcada ( Anjelica Huston) is in fact heroically hiding Jewish children on her pig farm. Huston does her best with a thin character, but even she struggles with the starchy dialogue: “Some people collect coins or stamps. We collect enemies of the Reich. ” Widow Horcada is also harbouring a Jewish man, Benjamin (Frederick Schmidt), who has become separated from his young daughter, Anya. Reno plays Jo’s grandfather, a salty first world war veteran who marches around the village wearing his army medals in proud defiance of the occupying force. The film is gorgeous to look at, all alpine meadow flowers and glorious green mountains. But the drama loses momentum pretty early on. When the Nazis grow suspicious of Widow Horcada, her resistance gang must decide: should they risk one last journey over the mountains? Schnapp, with his lovely innocent open face, carries it all so far. But the film pulls its punches, awkwardly rushing through difficult scenes, such as the one involving a sneering sadistic German officer performing a mock execution on a teenage boy with learning difficulties. Kids may feel they’re owed more honesty. What a soggy mess. • Waiting for Anya is released in the UK on 21 February.

Summary [ edit] The novel is set in the French village of Lescun during the Second World War. Jo Lalande is a young shepherd who is enjoying his childhood; but when his father goes to fight in the war, Jo has to become the man of the house. After an incident with a bear, Jo meets a mysterious man in the forest. He follows the man to his home and learns his secret - he is a Jew named Benjamin who is waiting for his daughter Anya to come find him as they were split from each other, and he is responsible for smuggling Jewish children to safety across the border into Spain, with the help of his mother-in-law, the Widow Horcada. Jo starts to help them to prove that he can be trusted. German soldiers move into town, and things become much more difficult. Although most of the town's inhabitants come to accept the German occupation, the task of getting the Jewish children across the border becomes more dangerous. Jo, his grandfather, Henri, Benjamin and the Widow Horcada devise a plan to get the children across. The plan requires the whole town to help the children escape, and relies on the German soldiers not noticing what is happening. But if they are caught, their lives will not be worth living... After the children have been taken safely across into Spain, except for Benjamin and Léah. The bear that Benjamin saved earlier on in is ends up getting him caught by the Germans. The German soldiers find them and take them to a concentration camp, where they are presumed to have been executed. Shortly thereafter the war ends and Anya has found her way home.

Five stars. You wont be able to refrain from shedding tears at least once in this film. IMDb says that this movie came out in 2016. Get this out of the way. Phenomenal delivery. Terrence Malick's return to narrative form was unexpected to me, but I was looking forward to this film with a lot of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I was just about the only one. The film opened tonight at my local theater, playing on the biggest screen they have, and only about 15 others showed up to watch it with me. As this film is more conventional than his recent features, I think a mainstream audience would very much enjoy it, and so it's really too bad that it's been ignored. I encourage everyone to go see it in theaters before it's gone.
Malick is still at his peak in terms of cinematography, but you might have expected his ability to get convincing performances out of actors to have waned from lack of use. Not so; while the performances are heightened to suit Malick's romantic style, they're also perfectly naturalistic whenever he needs them to be.
Although we're back on the guide rails of a traditional structure, the way in which Malick tells a story has not changed. We have the same obsession with nature imagery, with numerous lengthy shots. In this case it's mostly used for the purpose of straightforward symbolism, though the film's themes make use of it as well in ways that are more subtle. That "A Hidden Life" follows a less experimental approach also makes it more obvious that Malick has begun to repeat himself. Viewers will recognize many shots and visual metaphors from his previous films, perhaps most directly the highly-choreographed "couple meeting" shot. Much of the music is reused as well, with Malick continuing his reliance on Górecki to provide emotional weight. Not that this is ineffective - the small crowd at my theater found itself in tears at several points - but I think Malick is a bit too reliant on quoting himself to get the point across, and I'd like to see something entirely fresh from him. One bright spot was in the camera work. Though we see many of the same meandering camera movements as before, it's sharply edited to direct our attention to the narrative's subjects.
Surprisingly, as Malick's works (after "Badlands" tend to be very independent, the film reminded me of several from other directors. It's hard to imagine this film being made without Scorsese's "Silence" and Paul Schrader's "First Reformed" from the last several years. Several scenes and the use of camera angles in general owe a lot to Dreyer's "La passion de Jeanne d'Arc" as well. The strongest thematic resemblance of all, in my mind, was to "Calvary" 2014. Even if Malick had these films in mind as he made "A Hidden Life" the references are limited, and he delivers something genuinely new and unique for us to appreciate.
On its surface, the story is the simple one we've seen in a thousand forms. It's a story about human freedom and the responsibility that comes with it, and about what it means to be complicit. Themes like these are at the core of our understanding of people like Sophie Scholl, and they echo through our cultural memory down from the Nuremberg trials. Malick offers us something a little more subtle than that, although it's hard to notice at first. First we're asked to embrace the frailty of the human being, Franz, on the screen, and to understand him as a person who (like us) cannot see his place in history, and can only act here and now as he sees best for himself and his family. How can we understand sacrifice as a possibility if we can have no clear picture of the totality of the world in which we act?
"Through faith" seems to be the answer Franz and his wife Fani give us. They are devoted Christians, and the film's close examination of the faith they practice makes this the most explicitly religious among Malick's canon of spiritual films. Fani expresses the belief that all things will work together for their good, because they love God and endeavor to do his will. As we watch the film, it's very tempting to try to guess whether or not their trust will be rewarded. But no matter what happens in the film, we leave the theater to live - like them - lives of not-knowing, waiting, and hoping. What happens if God doesn't answer?
While that possibility might seem devastating at first, Malick has something hopeful and universal to offer. We're reminded in one of Malick's trademark voiceovers that "rain falls on the just and the unjust" reflecting trust in "the way of grace" he alludes to in "The Tree of Life. What we see in Malick is faith that our actions will be granted meaning in history, but he offers no visible guarantor of that trust. He shows us how this kind of faith helps Franz and Fani make difficult decisions, and cope with their lives' most challenging moments. Some of us may be tempted to think that kind of simple trust simplistic, but the framing of the film doesn't give us that option. We look at their actions as readers of history. When we affirm that their lives have meaning, we validate the faith by which they led those lives.
The film is a truly beautiful experience, and I urge you to see it on the biggest screen you can. While this is a relatively simple feature and occasionally self-indulgent, it's a rare treat to see the work of a great filmmaker doing what he does best. If you've been put off by Malick's previous slow-paced, more experimental films, I think you'll find this one much easier to watch. It doesn't feel its length at all (3 hours 5 minutes, according to the theater staff - possibly lengthened since it was shown in festivals) and parts of it are tightly edited enough to make my heart pound. It's a thrilling story told by our greatest creator of cinematic poetry.

Others grew up in the foster system. “Around 60 percent of kids that are trafficked in America come out of the foster care system, ” Rogers told Crosswalk. “These are U. -born kids, and they're being trafficked by U. citizens and being purchased by U. citizens. The foster care system is the main feeder. ” Traffickers are looking for girls with low self-esteem. “Because she's been growing up in an environment where she didn't have the best loving environment, she doesn't really even understand what true love is. She falls for this guy, head over heels. And he will groom her for six to nine months. And after a certain period of time, he'll flip a switch and say, ‘OK, now you work for me. ’” By then, many of the girls have developed an emotional bond based on trauma (Stockholm syndrome) or they’re addicted to drugs – and they don’t want to run away. Many women in the videos were victims of sex trafficking.  This means, Rogers said, that porn users are feeding the sex trafficking industry without even knowing it.  “We identify pornography as the No. 1 fueling factor to sex trafficking in America, ” Rogers said. It’s estimated that “over half of women involved in sex trafficking” are also forced into pornography, he said. Even worse, some of these porn addicts “then want to begin to actualize what they've been visualizing, ” he said. Paul says, “And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. ” (1 Corinthians 2:4) One of the most challenging verses for every Christian is Mark 16:17-18, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. ” All my life I wondered why we don’t see these things in most Christians lives. The answer, “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe” (John 4:48). These signs will follow those who believe the key word here is believe because when we believe we will build God’s kingdom and these signs will follow those people. Recently one of the men in the School of Discipleship was getting some deliverance for strongholds. We were almost done when God stopped me and said, “No, you have to cast out a spirit of infirmity. ” I was a little stunned but did what I was told. All of a sudden the man started to declare oh, my, oh, my, I can see, I can see. When I enquired about what he meant he told me that he had been blind in one eye for many years. The doctors called it a type of stroke and he had no use of the eye. But now he could see perfectly. This man, we will call J, has been faithful to cooperate with the process of discipleship and now God has healed his eye. When I read the above verses I am reminded that God is still doing signs and wonders today but not to entertain but to guide us into being formed into His image. The mission is where God’s power and glory still reside but we must go into the entire world, including our neighborhoods, and make disciples. So what are you saying? God’s purpose is to make us one, as John 17:22 states. He will accomplish this as we make disciples and allow God to form us into His image. God has given those in this process all the power and authority they need! A Hidden Life is his return to a more linear storyline, albeit Malick's style has been greatly affected by his previous three experimental movies, in a good way.
To The Wonder, Knight of Cups and Song to Song were very interesting experiments, but are very hard to enjoy for most viewers. Malick had to eventually return to utilize a plot.
In the frame of a beautiful alpine scenery, A Hidden Life is a real story of civil disobedience during Nazi Germany. Much as Malick's style dictates, it analises deeply its characters feelings and thoughts, raising questions on the ethics of obeying or disobeying an unjust government. Jagerstatter slowly becomes a silent, Christ-like character, judged by men who are forced to condemn him despite being touched by his determination.
A Hidden Life has a very loose plot. Rather than a structured plot, it feels like the more or less random succession of scenes, sometimes shot in that improvisational style that has dominated Malick's last three films. The voice overs however provide a very linear structure to the film, as mostly they are letters written by Franz and his wife to each other. The contents of the voice-overs are less philosophical and more sentimental, every-day related, which reminds of Malick's 70s films Badlands and Days of Heaven, rather than the post-Thin Red Line films.
On a closing note, we must praise the work of Malick's crew: Jörg Widmer, who has replaced Lubetzki for the photography, provides a notable conematographic style that, while mantaining that visual look that Malick's 21st Century films have, has its own beauty and peculiarity. The all-german cast delivered a wonderful english-speaking performance. August Diehl had one particular scene in which he conveyed strong feelings without uttering any word. Viewers might appreciate Bruno Ganz's final appearance in a film, in a Pilatesque role.
I personally believe that this film is among Malick's best, probably second only to The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line and maybe Days of Heaven. Definitely one of the best movies of this year.

I always found Terrence Malick movies to be unwatchable and extremely pretentious Oscar Bait.   And if I say this out loud, then I get accused of not appreciating art.   Making a Nazi movie is and always be Oscar Bait. As the Nazis move across Europe during WWII, Franz is called to serve in the German army and pledge his allegiance to Adolf Hitler. He knows the Nazis are wrong. They are taking innocent lives and occupying peaceful countries. Franz cannot support these actions of his motherland. He refuses to fight for Germany. As a result, he and his family become ostracized by their own neighbors… his wife spat upon, his children harassed, and his livelihood in ruins. Seeking counsel from his community, his Catholic church, and God; Franz surrenders himself to German authorities. Placed in prison, Franz awaits trial for treason as Fani tries to manage their farm without him. Isolated in his cell and tormented by guards, Franz must decide whether to be enslaved by his virtues or freed by the evils of men. This is my third experience with director Terrence Malick—having previously watched “ The Thin Red Line ” and “ The Tree of Life ”… which was recently declared the best film of the decade by the Associated Press. At times difficult to digest, his films certainly stand apart in today’s cinema. He is the most tactile director I have come across… allowing me to feel through the screen—the textures of fabrics, the warmth of skin, the grass under my feet. He often drives the narrative through whispers off-screen, visions of memories, and multiple perspectives in singular scenes. He allows you to experience the unfold rather than follow it from a distance. In “A Hidden Life, ” the ideas of good and evil are thoroughly examined. “The sun shines on both the good and evil…” one character states. “No one is innocent, ” claims another. Franz is constantly told that his sacrifice will benefit no one, and that he can’t change the world… the world is stronger. And yet, he is kind despite this persistent discouragement. Through everything, Franz and Fani have hope in God and in His plan. After all, in Romans 5:3-4 (NIV) clearly explains, “…we also glory in our suffering, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. ” For me, this is where “A Hidden Place” falls short. The HOPE they speak of seems absent from the film. For all the palpable feelings Malick brings to the screen, he is unable to generate feelings of hope. There is kindness, gentleness, and grace, but it all seems futile… a common theme through the Malick films I have watched. Nothing matters. Like the artist painting in Franz’s church—he paints suffering but experiences none of it. He profits from the suffering of others comfortably behind his paint brush. I know what it is to have hope. I understand hope. My hope is in Christ. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. ” —Psalm 62: 5-7 (NIV) Once you experience hope through Christ, that hope is irrepressible. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. ” —Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) Where this film fails to demonstrate hope, it succeeds in its relentless heartache. Franz must separate from Fani in a heartbreaking scene that took my breath away. His daughters miss their father and the peace of sleeping next to him at night. They don’t understand why he had to go away. Franz’s interactions with fellow inmates is tender but agonizing. The pain this family goes through is excruciating and powerful —making “A Hidden Life” very difficult to watch… especially for sensitive viewers. Even though the film is void of bad language, sexuality, or drug use; the thematic material is relentlessly heartbreaking and disturbing. There is some violence, but it is minimal… yet effective. “A Hidden Life” is based on a true story, and I truly love the message it’s trying to make—conviction, perseverance and hope. Sadly, these positive attributes are silenced by the heartache. At one point in prison, Franz declares, “I am free. ” I don’t think he believed it and neither did I.
